Del 7 al 15 de junio pasado, Juan José Hurtado, Director de la Asociación Pop No’j, invitado por la organización austriaca Südwind (Vientos del Sur), viajó a distintas ciudades de Austria para hablar sobre Cambio Climático y Migración.
Estas actividades se realizaron en Viena, Salzburgo e Innsbruck. Incluyeron: una actividad pública en la que participaron principalmente organizaciones de sociedad civil austriaca comprometidas con acciones para hacer frente al Cambio Climático, una entrevista con una funcionaria del Ministerio de Ambiente del Gobierno austriaco, charlas con varios grupos de estudiantes de secundaria, un encuentro con niños, participación en un panel junto a jóvenes austriacas activistas por la Justicia Climática, entre otras. Asimismo, se tuvo entrevistas con periodistas y se hizo grabaciones para programas de radio.
Isabella Szukits, de la organización Südwind, fue la principal anfitriona de esta gira y en varias de las actividades realizadas presentó el informe “Beyond Panic” (Más allá del pánico), una investigación realizada en coordinación con la Universidad de Bolonia, Italia y que tiene a Guatemala como uno de los 4 países de los que se hizo estudio de caso relativo a Cambio Climático.
Al respecto, expresó Juan José:
“Agradecemos a Südwind por esta oportunidad que me permite dar a conocer lo que se está viviendo en Guatemala en relación a la migración en la que también incide el Cambio Climático; asimismo denunciar la persecución y represión contra líderes y lideresas comunitarias e indígenas que defienden la tierra y el territorio, la corrupción enraizada en la estructura del país y la impunidad prevaleciente.
“La denuncia va acompañada de propuestas de vida surgidas desde los Pueblos Originarios que han llamado “Buen Vivir” (en idioma español) o “Utz Kaslemal” (en idioma Maya K’iche’) que plantean una convivencia armónica entre humanidad, Madre Naturaleza y energías del Cosmos.
“Esta experiencia permite estrechar relaciones y solidaridad entre el llamado ‘Norte Global’ y ‘Sur Global’ encaminadas a que preservemos nuestro hogar común y que construyamos un mundo justo, inclusivo.
“En lo personal, es una experiencia de mucho aprendizaje. Aunque cada país tiene sus particularidades, encontramos similitudes y tenemos causas comunes. Se trata de avanzar juntos por nuestro futuro común.
“Cito a Lila Watson, aborigen australiana que dijo: ‘Si vienes a ayudarme, estás perdiendo tu tiempo, pero si vienes porque tu liberación está unida a la mía, entonces trabajemos juntos’.”
“LET’S WORK TOGETHER FOR OUR COMMON FUTURE”
From June 7 to 15, Juan José Hurtado, Director of Associación Pop No’j (Guatemala), invited by the Austrian organization Südwind (Winds from the South), traveled to different cities in Austria to talk about Climate Change and Migration.
These activities were held in Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck and included: a public activity in which participated mainly Austrian civil society organizations committed to actions to address Climate Change, an interview with an official from the Austrian Government’s Ministry of the Environment, talks with several groups of high school students, a meeting with children, participation in a panel with young Austrian activists for Climate Justice. Also, interviews were held with journalists and recordings were made for radio programs.
Isabella Szukits, from Südwind, was the main hostess of this tour and in several of the activities carried out she presented the report “Beyond Panic”, an investigation carried out in coordination with the University of Bologna, Italy, that has Guatemala as one of the 4 countries for which a case study was made on Climate Change.
In this regard, Juan José expressed:
“We thank Südwind for this opportunity that allows me to share information from Guatemala in relation to migration, which is also affected by Climate Change; also denounce the persecution and repression against community and indigenous leaders who defend the land and territory, the corruption rooted in the structure of the country and the prevailing impunity.
“This is accompanied by proposals for life arising from the Original Peoples that are called “Buen Vivir” (in Spanish) or “Utz Kaslemal” (in Maya K'iche' language). It seeks a harmonious coexistence between humanity, Mother Nature and the energies of the Cosmos.
"This experience allows a closer relations and solidarity between the so-called 'Global North' and 'Global South' oriented to preserve our common home and build a just and inclusive world.
“Personally, it is a learning experience. Although each country has its peculiarities, we find similarities and we have common causes. Thus, we must work together for our common future.
“I quote Lila Watson, an Australian Aboriginal who said: ‘If you have come here to help me, you are wasting your time, but if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.’
